Growing businesses are pulled in many directions: new products, new locations, new customers, new partnerships. Without a clear strategy, energy and money are spread too thin. Strategic planning helps you choose.

Step 1: Clarify where you want to be

Define your vision for the next three to five years in concrete terms — revenue, markets, reputation, team size. Ambition is good, but it must be specific.

Step 2: Understand where you are today

Honestly assess your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Look at your numbers, your customers and your competitors. A business health check can provide an objective starting point.

Step 3: Choose your priorities

Identify the three to five strategic priorities that will close the gap between today and your vision. Saying "no" to good opportunities that do not fit is as important as saying "yes".

Step 4: Turn priorities into actions

For each priority, define specific initiatives, owners, timelines and budgets. This is where strategy becomes real.

Step 5: Measure and review

Set a small number of key performance indicators and review progress every quarter. Adjust the plan as the market changes — strategy is a living process.

A good strategy fits on one page and is understood by everyone in the business.
